Fairbanks Assembly Gets Earful to Regulate Air Pollutants

In more than three hours of public testimony on air quality the Borough Assembly heard during an air quality town hall meeting Wednesday night, more than 50 people testified, giving their own takes on just what the assembly should do to tackle the area’s chronically bad wintertime air pollution.

The vast majority of the testimony — everyone except three testifiers — was in full support of the Borough Assembly taking air pollution regulations into its own hands.

The Borough Assembly was barred from regulating air pollution for the last four years thanks to a voter initiatives passed in 2010 and renewed 2012.

The borough can now assume regulatory power because the Home Heating Initiative failed in the municipal election this fall by about 3 percentage points, amid a strong campaign of concerned citizens.

Suggestions were far-ranging from all different kinds of burn bans, exchange programs, tax breaks and taxes.

Assemblyman John Davies, one of the main supporters of the meeting, said the meeting was a starting place for the assembly to begin considering regulations in the coming months.
